Berndt Denmark

At the time of Not Like Us, Denmark is the Director of General Defense for the country of Verdant Prime, sitting on the Solity Council as one of the seven top leaders of the country. Short and swarthy in complexion, his penetrating eyes notice everything. Denmark is a man of power with supreme confidence in his abilities.

Denmark is also a ruthless man. While still in tertiary school at age 23 (Verdant years), he used information from a friend to turn in an entire group to the Solity Guards. All but one were taken away in the dead of night. At age 38, while serving in the State department, he denied aid to the planet of Branch when their own war had destroyed their ecology. In Not Like Us, you find him pushing the entire world of Verdant toward global war so that his country can regain ascendancy.

He is scheming, manipulative, threatening, controlling—all the qualities that make for a powerful politician. He has risen to the top of the country over a trail of damaged people.

Jake Palatin is our protagonist. Denmark is Jake’s boss.

“So what are you doing to make it smaller?” Denmark insisted.
Jake felt the needle of anxiety. He used his implant through the local InfoNet to bring up a holo of different test data over his desk.
“Yesterday’s data shows us the containment laser power needed.” He pointed at a graph in the data. “The energy of the antimatter varies with—”
“Time is short, my boy. Very short. I’ve given you good advancement, because I’ve trusted in you. We’ve rewarded you with leadership, good perks and a nice apartment, right?”
Jake nodded.
“You should know we have other irons in the fire. War is coming, and this bomb is a key deterrent weapon. You need to work faster.” After a pause, he repeated, “Faster.”
Denmark’s eyes bored into Jake’s for a concentrated moment. Then, without waiting for a response, Denmark swept out, his expensive scent lingering.
“Work faster,” Jake muttered aloud. “Faster doesn’t change physics.”
