What’s it like to live on the planet Verdant?
In a prior post (Future History), you can see that Verdant was colonized from One Hope in 2555 AD (Earth years). It was the fifteenth human world. Air and biology were very compatible. Gravity was less at 0.94G. Verdant, however, presented some unique problems for humanity due to its fast rotation (16 hour days) and short year (450 days, equating to about 82% of an Earth year).
Life was difficult for the colonists. People had to adjust physically even while building this new colony. Humans have not evolved for a 16-hour diurnal cycle, and it took hard years to adjust their bodies. Even four hundred years later, the physical issues still affect them; people tire easily, their bodies wear out quicker, and their emotions are sometimes raw. These factors contribute to the impending wars that will likely destroy their world.
The land mass is small at 23M km2, only about 16% of Earth’s 149M km2. There wasn’t much room for humans to spread out, but we can still imagine a lot of territory, like small versions of South and North America. On Verdant, the two continents are about equal size. Alpha stretches east-west, straddles the equator, and is taken up by the country of Verdant Prime. Beta is north of Alpha, across the Vissensee Channel, and stretches northward. It holds Tileus (east) and Rathas (west) with a mountain range between. The Islands of Winter are off the northeast coast of Beta. Only four countries, but they each cover areas comparable to large countries on Earth.
Someday there will be a map.
